Future figure releases.

Enlace a esta entrada 11 nov 11

Can you give us some idea on when other figures will be released? I know you were aiming for monthly releases, but which figures will be in the next release and those subsequent? How long for example before we can expect figures for the Nurses, Butlers/Maids etc?
Thanks

I think you have some information wrong. They aim for bimestral or trimestral releases, but the first two waves of releases (the one we have already and the next one with the starter figures in separate blisters) will be quicker (probably on december we'll get the second one).

The rest of releases... well, we probably will have to wait until february or march to get another wave with new miniatures for all four factions.

Hi Robh.
Yes, this first release is special, because we're releasing the factions and the book in one month, and the individual characters in blisters in just a couple of weeks. After that, we will be releasing new stuff three-four times a year... and to know what we'll be releasing, you just have to take a look at the rulebook and review those gentle characters; we will be releasing them all.

I have to say I disagree with the staff about the convenience of that release plan for Carnevale. I think it would be far better to do a monthly release even if it would mean to have news just for one faction at a time.

A three-four months time span is too long to keep audiences' interest. We all have seen many good games fall dead to the market by loosing their players and costumers between one release and the next one.

i agree. it would be hard for me to keep people involved if that happens. the game bushido was a big hit at my store and is dying out cause releases come out every 2 months. please don't do this to you self. we want you to succeed.

I used to work also on a store a couple of years ago and that was also my experience with games such as Zenit's Nemesis, Darkson Design's AE-WWII or Alkemy. I don't want to see that happen to Carnevale.

I confess that's my main fear about Carnevale.
I saw too many skirmish games dying these last years, I would not like to see one more.

Also, steady growth is better than rapid growth that you can't handle. One of Rackham's problems was distribution and inability to align supply with increased demand. From what I've understood, this is one of the main reasons that killed AT-43.

Displaying of the greens is a great way of keeping the interest going, but even so, the miniatures depicted in the rules should be done fairly quickly so as to give players access to enough miniatures to play mid-sized games. After that, I'd suggest releasing alternate-pose sculpts to basic troops (2 identical Doctors of the Arsenale sculpts in the starter was a slight disappointment) with weapon options.

I firmly, feverishly hope that among your future releases you will include your own rendition of the - so cute but lethal- female Hellequin of the video game 'Assassin's Creed II'.

Just change the hat / top of the hood (silly, anyway) to avoid any problem of 'Intellectual property' / copyright &c. A large velvet beret or, best a tricorne (so commonly associated to-day with the Venice Carnival) would be perfect.
Btw the Hellequin of the video game is a little on the skinny side: gaming figurines are not intended to be individually scrutinized under a magnifying glass, but to be seen from a distance: some essential features have to be.... emphasized :) :)
Currently potential players intend to use the 'Harley Quinn' mini or a 'female Arlequin', but who would want proxies when one can have the original?

PS: don't disregard players who discuss possible proxies for your minis: many games died or are 'slumbering' because the editor, to 'enslave' customers, made minis of a size or style totally incompatible with the figurines from any other manufacturers. Discussions of 'proxies' on public forums and discussion groups are a *great* advertising for the game, and their use keeps the interest of the players hot.

Great to see the Pulchinella released with the split starters. I have plans for a couple of them. I am looking around for other 'Comedia del Arte' type characters at the moment, anyone know of a Pierrot in 28mm?

I agree with the comments here on more regular releases. I think fewer figures being released more often is a better marketing approach than nothing for 3 or 4 months then half a dozen figures all at once. Keep pushing the game through the forums with regular releases of figures, scenarios, dedicated scenery building (St Mark's Lion Statue, Piazza Fountains, Landing stages and pontoons, Gondolas), figure painting articles. Anything to remind people the game exists. At the best of times gamers are very fickle and have frighteningly short attention spans.

The above point on Proxies is a hard one. I know that showing/discussing proxies risks a negative impact on sales of actual Carnevale figures, but game pictures which always show the same few figures become stale and predictable. I now have almost 30 figures painted ready for the game, but have just started on my first "official" ones, so have not shown any of them here. Maybe seeing they could adapt and use figures they already have would inspire potential buyers to download the rules and pick up some official figures as a cheap way to begin playing Carnevale. As with all Boutique games getting started is expensive (cost per figure is very high)

Proxies can certainly be beneficial for a game. I remember when Malifaux started and people were openly posting proxies on forums, now look at Malifaux. It's huge!

There are plenty of things to be doing to keep people interested. GCT Studios (Bushido) had bi-monthly painting competitions as well as new fluff and 'behind the scenes' stuff every week. Keep players involved and they will come back to you. Be like Rackham or GW (rarely any sneak peaks, little to no fin involvement at all) and watch your players drop like flies.

A bi-monthly schedule can certainly work, tri-monthly or quarterly releases is just a bit too long to wait I think. In the time they should have been ogling the new releases they could have found another game, or went back to an old flame. Keep 'em eager!

Just to add a note on the comments on the number of releases we plan to do during the year. They will hopefully grow in number as we become a bigger company, but right now, we're just a month old :). We want to continue offering the best sculpts made by the best sculptors in the market, and that requires time and money. We will do our best to manage both, while keeping you all engaged in the game. As the saying goes, learn to walk before you run. So this is how we are going to do it at least for the first year and a half.
But in the meantime, we can offer you treats every now and then. Stay tuned next week, because since you people are probably going to have some time to spend playing during the Christmas season, we will publish a free multi-player adventure for you to spend a whole evening playing Carnevale with your group of friends.

For a future figurine, what about combining the Hellequin of 'Assassin's Creed 2' http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZOWr6K2qBms = http://tinyurl.com/cug36fu with this Elfette in tricorne (normal ears!): http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Nbjxm4skT6Q/Th_V1Hygp_I/AAAAAAAACWE/jXbq3Mx0tvA/s1600/pic521.jpg = http://tinyurl.com/bufl47o

(Remember: gaming figurines are not intended to be individually scrutinized under a magnifying glass, but to be seen from some distance: essential features are to be *emphasized* - do you know the TinMan miniatures? http://tinminis.com/

"I am looking around for other 'Comedia del Arte' type characters at the moment, anyone know of a Pierrot in 28mm?"

On The Miniature Page potential players exchanged suggestions for 'proxy' miniatures to enrich the game while Vesper is extending its range of 'official' miniatures:
http://theminiaturespage.com/boards/msg.mv?id=247614
http://theminiaturespage.com/boards/msg.mv?id=246491
For a kind of Pierrot someone suggested a 'Malifaux' figurine:
http://www.boardgamebetty.com/product_images/q/561/WYR4038__34437_zoom.jpg
(with an extra pair of arms, but surgery is possible!).
Symmetrically I recently posted suggestions about playing 'Malifaux' using 18th C. miniatures, including some Carnevale ones:

The masks...
Perfectly 'in character' and indeed required for the Venitian(*) Carnival, but restrict the usefulness -and thus the *sales*- of figurines otherwise 'generic' for the 18th C., e.g. the Barnaboti mujer, the 'Noble', the Duque, even the White Dove. It certain could be possible to offer two different heads, even as alternative minis or as a 'sprue' of parts with 2 heads: other manufacturers (though small -r maybe *because* they start small and hope to widen their patronage- routinely do it (or offer two different arms, differing by the weapon held); for instance: http://www.ragingheroes.com/collections/complete-collection/products/asharah-sf-28mm . . http://www.ragingheroes.fr/products/kapitan-ivanka-kurganova-28mm

*: I was to type 'Venerian': did I failed a sanity roll? Am I victim of the Doctors of the Ospedale?

I empathize with both sides of this discussion and would like to add the main thing I would like to see from Vesper-On is honesty. Now I'm not accusing them of dishonesty at all, what I'm saying is just let us know what we can expect and stick to it. I would much rather wait for a release and know that I am getting it when I was told I would be able to get it than be told a time and that time rolls around and no release. If Vesper has a delay, I would rather just be told that a release is to be delayed than be given an unrealistic date and then be dissapointed. Regular communication can keep interest going and so far I like what I see from Vesper-On. Questions here on the forums are responded to in a timely fashion and the quality I've seen so far is top notch. They have my support and if I have to wait a little longer for releases while they grow, so be it.
