Painted Rashaar Faction Box, Criticism Wanted

Enlace a esta entrada 29 feb 12

It took me long enough to get these guys done and photographed but here they are. My second Ugdru-Rashaar, two hybrids, and a Magi-Rashaar. The Ugdru had extra gloss varnish added to it to give it that nice slimy look. The hybrids are duller and dirty, I wanted to show the squalid conditions they live in through their appearance while also giving off a slightly mutated look. The magi-rahsaar is a mixture of the ugdru and hybrids being both dirty, but still very green and slimy. The gold on him is a mixture of gold, white and silver to tie into the whitish gold mentioned in The Shadow Over Innsmouth. I missed a big mold line on the magi, but somehow I managed to paint him before noticing, but I don’t feel it detracts from the model much. And of course there is the obligatory group shot with the whole box. I’m quite fond of these guys so please let me know what you all think and I welcome any advice. I can’t wait to add more characters to my budding cult and I will post them as they come!

First of all, congrats on getting the whole starter painted! I'm still struggling with mine.

I do like the overall feel of these pieces. They convey a real sense of murkyness and living in the sewers/canals and all in all in less than clean places. That murky olive green that you've used on the clothes ties the group together without making it look uniform-like.

The hybrids also have nice expression of desperation and slight unhingedness on them. I also like the fact that your shadows and highlights have differing colours from the main cloth - makes them livelier and dirtier. The dude hybrid's arms have some mold lines, though, and the joins of the arms to the body look a bit messy.

Ugdrus are nicely a different shade making them look more fish and less sewer. They look suitably creepy.

Finally, the magi-rashaar, I like the regal but murky look you've given him. The skin tone is interesting, though I feel that both clothes and skin being a warm shade of earthy green mixes them together a bit. Maybe the cold green you've used for Ugdrus would've made for a clearer separation between skin and cloth. Also, painting the sash a different colour like black or grey would've boosted the mini I feel. I do love the colour you've chosen for the trident - very coral-like and it pops but doesn't distract. And the explanation for the gold tone was a very nice touch.

So yeah, thank you for sharing these, kudos for finishing them and good luck in the games! :)

Many thanks to you for the praise and advice. Ah mold lines strike again, I’ll have to go over the next models I get with a fine-toothed comb. And yes, I’ll have to fix the hybrid’s joints, at one point I had to reattach his arms and it appears I may have been a bit hasty while doing it. I’ll also probably fix up the magi with your suggestions, after all my leader should look his best for battle!
